Abstract

This chapter delves into the structural stability of gravity dams, focusing on the evaluation of performance indicators through various methods. The study compares the traditional gravity method with the load increase method and the strength reduction method, highlighting their respective advantages and limitations. A case study of a 17.9-meter-high gravity dam is presented, illustrating the application of these methods in real-world scenarios. The analysis includes the use of finite element methods to assess crack propagation and stress distribution, providing a comprehensive overview of the dam's stability. The results indicate that increasing the water level offers robust outcomes, while increasing water density is less effective. The strength reduction method is also explored, showing its potential in determining the reduction factor at which the structure's safety is compromised. The chapter concludes with a comparison of the finite element method results with those obtained from the gravity method, highlighting the differences and the need for further studies to accurately determine crack length.
