Abstract

A novel kind of polyoxymethylene (POM) copolymer with improved thermal stability was synthesized by cationic ring opening copolymerization of trioxane and styrene oxide. It was found that the styrene oxide units were introduced onto the molecule of POM successfully, and the copolymer was composed of main SSS homopolymerization sequence structure and a small amount of TSS, SST, TST and STS sequence structure. Due to the existence of thermal stable phenyl, trioxane/styrene oxide copolymer exhibited relatively high thermal stability, and the thermal stabilization effect of 0.6 mol% styrene oxide units in POM chains can reach and even exceed the level of twice amount of dioxolane units. The molecular regularity and flexibility of POM were weakened by introduction of styrene oxide units, resulting in the decrease of crystallinity and reduction of spherulite size.
