Study of Bajakah Tampala (Spatholobus Littoralis Hassk) Extract as Green Corrosion Inhibitor for Carbon Steel API 5L Grade B in 3.5% NaCl Solution

This chapter delves into the critical issue of corrosion in industrial sectors, particularly focusing on carbon steel API 5L Grade B used in pipelines for oil and gas distribution. The study investigates the efficacy of Bajakah Tampala (Spatholobus littoralis Hassk) extract as a green corrosion inhibitor in a 3.5% NaCl solution, a medium mimicking the corrosive nature of seawater. The extract's antioxidant properties, attributed to its phenolic compounds, are highlighted as a key factor in inhibiting the corrosion process. The experimental methodology includes potentiodynamic polarization tests and immersion tests, providing a robust framework for evaluating the inhibitor's performance. The results demonstrate that the addition of Bajakah Tampala extract significantly reduces the corrosion rate of carbon steel, with the highest efficiency observed at a concentration of 750 ppm. The study also reveals that the extract acts as a mixed-type inhibitor, forming a protective barrier on the metal surface. The chapter concludes with a detailed analysis of the corrosion products using X-ray diffraction, confirming the formation of Iron Oxide Chloride (FeOCl) in the presence of the inhibitor. This research not only contributes to the development of environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors but also offers valuable insights into the mechanisms of corrosion inhibition in saline environments.
