Abstract

The study delves into the uniaxial compressive strength of water-sensitive carbonaceous mudstones, a material widely used in southwestern China but often discarded due to its disintegration in water. The research focuses on the single-particle crushing strength and its deterioration under water conditions, which significantly impacts engineering applications. Previous models have qualitatively analyzed the effect of particle shape on crushing strength, but this study introduces a shape factor to quantify this effect. Additionally, it incorporates friction strength into the model to improve the prediction of compressive strength. The article presents comprehensive test results on the water content of carbonaceous mudstones and the single-particle breakage under different water contents. The findings provide a new method for calculating the crushing strength of irregular particles and the compressive strength of soil–rock aggregates, offering valuable reference information for the engineering application of carbonaceous mudstone.
