Abstract

This study delves into the behavior of social groups in pedestrian flow on the staircases of railway station foot-over bridges, focusing on how group dynamics influence walking speeds and formations. Key topics include the impact of group size on pedestrian speed, the various formations adopted by different group sizes, and the effect of luggage on movement efficiency. The study reveals that pedestrians in groups walk slower than individuals, with an average speed reduction of 35.92% as group size increases. Additionally, the presence of luggage significantly reduces walking speed by 22.5%, highlighting the additional effort required. The research also identifies predominant formations such as line, river, V, and inverted V, which vary based on group size and interaction needs. These findings offer valuable insights for designing pedestrian facilities and managing crowd dynamics, ensuring safer and more efficient movement in high-traffic areas.
