Abstract

This study delves into the critical factors influencing the design and performance of flexible pavements, with a particular focus on the impact of actual tire contact areas. By comparing the commonly assumed circular contact areas with real-world measurements, the research reveals significant discrepancies that can lead to increased stress and strain on pavement surfaces. The study employs 3D Finite Element Analysis to investigate the stress and strain distributions under different tire configurations, including dual-axle and three-axle trucks. Key findings include a 3.4% reduction in contact area for dual-axle trucks and a 5.6% reduction for three-axle trucks when considering actual contact areas, leading to elevated strain values and a higher risk of pavement damage. The research underscores the importance of precise engineering calculations for infrastructure design and road construction, emphasizing the need for more accurate, data-driven models to extend pavement longevity and optimize construction costs and maintenance.
