Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical role of railway systems in meeting NATO's military needs, particularly in the Baltic Sea region. It begins with a review of the literature on railway use for military purposes, emphasizing the strategic importance of railways despite the liberalization of the railway system. The study compares the development of railway networks in NATO countries bordering the Baltic Sea, focusing on the 1435 mm gauge railway required by NATO for military transport. Through a detailed examination of railway density, population, and economic indicators, the chapter reveals significant disparities in railway development among these countries. The analysis highlights that while some countries' railway networks are justified by their population and economic output, others fall short of NATO requirements. The chapter concludes with a nuanced discussion on the implications of these findings for the effectiveness of NATO's military logistics in the region, providing a comprehensive overview of the current state and future priorities for Baltic State railways.
