Abstract

This chapter delves into the application of recursive subspace identification (RSI) techniques for real-time structural health monitoring during seismic events. The study presents various recursive formulations for system identification, focusing on their ability to detect time-varying dynamic characteristics of structures. It thoroughly examines user-defined parameters, such as the forgetting factor and the Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC), and analyzes their impact on identification results. The chapter utilizes two distinct datasets to verify the proposed methods: laboratory tests conducted on a four-story steel frame with variations in column stiffness, and seismic responses from a seven-story reinforced concrete (RC) frame during the Chi-Chi Earthquake. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of RSI in continuously detecting variations in structural behavior and tracking time-varying modal parameters. The study concludes with a summary of the findings and general recommendations for selecting appropriate user-defined parameters in RSI, providing valuable insights for professionals in the field of structural health monitoring.
