Abstract

The article delves into the suitability and bearing behavior of prestressed high-strength concrete (PHC) pipe piles in mudstone formations, a sedimentary rock characterized by high cohesive force and low compressive strength. It highlights the challenges posed by traditional pile foundation techniques in mudstone, which can induce hydration and degrade the mechanical properties of the soil. The study presents field load tests and three-dimensional numerical modeling to evaluate the vertical bearing capacity of PHC piles in mudstone, offering valuable insights for foundation reinforcement and design. The research reveals that PHC piles exhibit excellent elastic deformation properties and minimal compression deformation in the mudstone bearing layer, making them a viable option for critical structures in such geological conditions. The article also explores the unique interaction between the plastic deformation characteristics of mudstone and PHC piles, which contributes to the stability and safety of the pile foundation. Furthermore, it discusses the load transfer mechanisms and failure modes of PHC piles, providing a comprehensive understanding of their behavior under various loading conditions. The findings are applicable to evaluating the bearing performance of PHC piles in similar conditions and can aid in the wider use of PHC piles in areas with mudstone.
