Abstract

The article introduces a groundbreaking one-step dip-coating technique to produce superhydrophobic and flame-retardant alginate fabrics. Traditional methods for achieving these properties often involve complex, multi-step processes and the use of environmentally harmful chemicals. The novel approach leverages the hydrolysis-condensation product of long-chain alkyl siloxane, such as hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS), to directly create low-surface-energy roughness on the fabric surface. This method not only simplifies the production process but also enhances the sustainability of the fabrics by using non-fluorinated and biomass-derived materials. The resulting superhydrophobic fabrics exhibit excellent water repellence and self-cleaning properties, with water contact angles exceeding 150° and sliding angles less than 10°. Moreover, the treated fabrics maintain their inherent flame retardancy, making them ideal for applications in home decor and protective textiles. The study also highlights the importance of micro- and nano-scale surface roughness in achieving superhydrophobicity and demonstrates the practicality of the one-step dip-coating method for real-world applications.
