Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of supply chain management adoption (SCMA) in enhancing competitive advantage and business performance, with a particular focus on the mediating effect of innovation. The study is grounded in empirical data from micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Padang, Indonesia, a region that plays a pivotal role in the national economy. The research highlights the significance of SCMA practices, such as strategic alliances, information sharing, and total quality management, in fostering a competitive edge. It also explores how innovation, encompassing product, process, and administrative changes, can moderate the relationship between competitive advantage and business performance. The chapter challenges conventional wisdom by revealing that, contrary to expectations, innovation does not significantly strengthen the competitive advantage of young MSMEs. Instead, it underscores the direct and indirect influences of competitive advantage and SCMA on business performance, offering valuable insights for practitioners and academics alike. The findings are particularly relevant in the context of developing economies, where MSMEs form the backbone of the economic landscape.
