Abstract

The article delves into the complex relationship between military service and electoral success for congressional candidates. It challenges the conventional wisdom that veteran status automatically confers an electoral advantage, presenting mixed evidence from previous studies. The authors propose a theory that integrates cue-based processing and issue ownership to explain how veteran status can be leveraged effectively in campaign communications. Through two survey experiments, the study finds that veteran candidates benefit more from discussing crime than national defense, contrary to initial expectations. The findings suggest that voters perceive veteran candidates as patriotic and courageous regardless of the issues they discuss, but nonveterans can enhance their national defense issue ownership by discussing it. The research concludes that the most advantageous issues for veteran candidates are those that evoke service-related traits indirectly, rather than directly military-related issues. The study contributes to the broader understanding of how candidate characteristics interact with campaign messaging to influence voter evaluations.
