Abstract

This chapter delves into the surface modification of lignin using cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), a cationic surfactant. The modification process involves the adsorption of CTAB molecules onto the lignin surface, enhancing its hydrophobicity and compatibility with non-polar polymer matrices. The chapter discusses various characterization techniques, including FTIR, TGA, and contact angle measurements, to analyze the modified lignin. The potential applications of CTAB-modified lignin in industries such as adhesives, coatings, composites, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture are explored. The chapter also highlights the advantages of modified lignin over unmodified lignin and other additives, including improved solubility, compatibility, and tailored properties. Furthermore, it discusses the challenges and future directions in the field, emphasizing the need for scalable and cost-effective modification processes. The chapter concludes with a summary of key findings and their implications for the field of lignin modification, providing a comprehensive overview of the topic.
