Abstract

This chapter delves into the surface modification of lignin using poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), highlighting its potential to enhance lignin's hydrophilicity, dispersibility, and compatibility with hydrophilic matrices. The text explores various methods of surface modification, including graft copolymerization, esterification, and physical adsorption, each offering unique advantages and challenges. Characterization techniques such as FTIR, NMR, TGA, and SEM are discussed to evaluate the effectiveness of these modifications. The chapter also covers the applications of PEO-modified lignin in biocomposites, adhesives, coatings, and drug delivery systems, emphasizing its role in creating sustainable and high-performance materials. The conclusion underscores the transformative potential of PEO-modified lignin in aligning industrial practices with global sustainability goals, paving the way for innovative solutions across various industries.
