Abstract

The chapter delves into the growing demand for customized implants due to population growth and aging, highlighting the challenges in manufacturing high-quality, varied implantable devices. It introduces metal-Material Extrusion (MEX) as a promising solution for producing customized implants, despite its poor surface finishing. The study compares thermal treatment and micro-EDM techniques to improve surface quality, evaluating their effectiveness through roughness parameters and defect analysis. The thermal treatment, using a hot-air gun, redistributes material to smooth surfaces, while micro-EDM removes material layers, each method presenting unique advantages and limitations. The research concludes with a comparison of the two approaches, identifying the most effective method for enhancing surface quality in additive manufacturing.
