Abstract

On one of our trend scouting tours we discovered the small booth of Sascha and Martin and asked for a pitch. During the first 15 min, I realised that this was not only a cool research project, but a vision with a clear mission and solid foundation that would be worthwhile exploring further and ideating a future scenario. The project of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and its project and support partners has proven how sustainable mobility can be shaped and implemented in developing countries. Securing the survival of families in rural or remote areas triggered the go-ahead for an unprecedented project. Criteria such as security, supply and income security, as well as the establishment of new value chains, control the innovation process. The innovation, the aCar, presents itself to the manufacturing and automotive industries as a multi-functional, modular and mobile service provider.
When we talk about autonomous driving, we mean an object, in this case a vehicle or a module, which without a driver can independently master all tasks in all situations. But autonomy also means in the broader sense to be free and self-determined, and to attain a degree of self-administration. In particular, the latter definition of autonomy is experienced by the farmers of Ghana through the aCar. The aCar [1] is a very special vehicle, which was developed through the cooperation of research and foundation institutions in the USA, Nigeria and Munich under the direction of the chair of Prof. Lienkamp [2]. aCar is also the history of EVUM Motors [3].
