Abstract

This chapter delves into the sustainability assessment of reinforced soil walls (RSWs), a popular earth-retaining solution in transport infrastructure. It focuses on the selection of reinforced fill (R-Fill), a critical design component accounting for 35–40% of the wall's cost. The study compares frictional and fine-frictional fill materials, evaluating their economic, environmental, and social impacts. By presenting inflection points for financial costs and overall sustainability, the chapter aims to guide decision-making processes. It encourages the use of local construction materials and promotes clean, environmentally sound technologies, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals 9 and 11.
