Abstract

This chapter delves into the sustainability of blockchain technologies, examining their environmental impact, scalability, and economic efficiency. It highlights the growing interest in programmable blockchains and smart contracts, emphasizing the need for sustainable solutions. The study compares 29 different blockchains, evaluating their energy consumption, transaction costs, and user-friendliness. Key findings include the exceptional energy efficiency of IOTA 2.0, the low transaction costs of IOTA, IOTA 2.0, and EOS, and the high scalability of blockchains like Aptos, Polkadot, Near, and Solana. The chapter concludes that different blockchains offer unique advantages, making it crucial to consider specific use cases when selecting the appropriate technology. Readers will gain insights into the sustainability aspects of various blockchains and their potential impact on the environment and society.
