Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical issue of ballast degradation in railway infrastructure, which is exacerbated by the increasing demands of modern transportation. It introduces innovative solutions such as under sleeper pads, under ballast mats, and synthetic energy absorbing layers made from recycled rubber materials. The chapter presents extensive research findings from large-scale cubical triaxial tests, drop hammer impact tests, and finite element modelling, demonstrating the effectiveness of these materials in reducing ballast breakage and track deformation. Additionally, it includes field test results from instrumented tracks, providing real-world evidence of the benefits of these innovative solutions. The chapter highlights the potential of recycled rubber materials to not only mitigate ballast degradation but also enhance overall track stability and performance.
