Abstract

This study delves into the synthesis of magnetite (Fe3O4) from blue dust, a fine particulate waste product of iron ore mining. The research investigates the combined effects of ball milling and heat treatment on the transformation of hematite (Fe2O3) in blue dust into magnetite. The study reveals that prolonged ball milling reduces the particle size of blue dust to the nanometer range and induces significant microstructural changes. Subsequent heat treatment at 750°C under an argon atmosphere facilitates the phase transformation from hematite to magnetite. The resulting magnetite exhibits a saturation magnetization of 70 emu/g, approaching the values reported for chemically synthesized magnetite. The study proposes a mechanism for this transformation, involving the formation of FeO as an intermediate phase. This research highlights a technically viable solid-state synthesis approach for converting blue dust into magnetite, offering a potential solution for waste utilization and magnetite production.
