Synthesis and characterization of polymethylhydrosiloxane using dichloromethane as a candidate material for vitreous substitution

Abstract   

The article delves into the synthesis and characterization of polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) as a potential substitute for vitreous humor in vitreoretinal surgery. It addresses the challenges of using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a current substitute, particularly the formation of cyclic chains and the difficulty in obtaining the D4 monomer. The study introduces dichloromethylsilane (DCHS) as a precursor and dichloromethane (DCM) as a solvent, aiming to achieve a suitable viscosity for clinical applications. The synthesis process involves a two-stage method: hydrolysis to produce short-chain PMHS and condensation to produce long-chain PMHS. The authors report significant improvements in polymerization time and control over synthesis parameters, resulting in a PMHS with a viscosity of 930 mPa.s, close to the required range for vitreous humor substitution. The characterization of the synthesized PMHS includes viscosity, refractive index, surface tension, and spectroscopic analyses, confirming its potential as a viable alternative to PDMS. The study highlights the potential of PMHS as a safe and effective substitute material for vitreoretinal surgery, paving the way for further research and clinical applications.
