Abstract

The article delves into the synthesis and properties of vinyl silane grafted styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in latex, addressing the limitations of non-polar SBR in reinforcing with polar fillers. The study introduces a novel approach to grafting modification using ATRP, which allows for the controlled synthesis of SBR with uniform graft chain structures, overcoming the instability and lack of control associated with conventional free radical methods. The research highlights the successful preparation of brominated SBR (SBR-Br) as a macromolecular initiator and the subsequent grafting of vinyl silanes, resulting in enhanced mechanical properties and a well-defined core-shell structure in the latex particles. The investigation into the reaction kinetics and morphological characteristics, supported by advanced analytical techniques such as ATR-FTIR, 1H NMR, AFM, and TEM, provides a comprehensive understanding of the structural and mechanical improvements achieved. The article concludes with the potential for developing new varieties of SBR with tailored properties, offering significant advancements in the field of polymer science and materials engineering.
