Marcasite single crystals were synthesiz-ed directly by a reaction of aqueous solutions containing Fe
2+
and Fe

with H
2
S and polysulphides at 200°C. It might be that natural marcasite formed according to some similar recipe, making use of an interaction of H

S and polysulphides with pore fluids containing Fe

or Fe

e.g. iron sulphates or chlorides. The structure of synthetic marcasite was refined from synchrotron diffraction data by the Rietveld method.
