Abstract

The article offers a comprehensive overview of Polylactic Acid (PLA), a bio-based, biodegradable thermoplastic polymer with growing significance in the bioplastics market. It delves into the global production of plastics and the rising demand for bioplastics, emphasizing PLA's advantages such as biodegradability, renewability, and biocompatibility. The synthesis methods of PLA, including direct condensation polymerization, azeotropic dehydrative condensation polymerization, and ring-opening polymerization, are explained in detail. The article also discusses the properties of PLA, including its physical, mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties, as well as its degradation mechanisms and processing techniques like extrusion, injection molding, and thermoforming. Additionally, it highlights the diverse applications of PLA in food packaging, medical and biomedical fields, agriculture, automotive, and textile industries.
