Abstract

This study explores the impact of chronic exposure to cigarettes and e-cigarettes on tactile learning and memory in rats, focusing on neural alterations in the barrel cortex and hippocampus. Through behavioral tests such as the Open Field Test, Novel Object Recognition Test, and Novel Texture Recognition Test, the study assesses the cognitive deficits induced by both forms of nicotine exposure. Histological analyses reveal significant damage in the brain regions critical for sensory processing and memory, highlighting the potential risks of both traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes. The findings suggest that while e-cigarettes are often marketed as a safer alternative, they may still pose substantial threats to cognitive function and neural health. This research underscores the importance of further investigating the long-term effects of e-cigarette use and informs public health policies aimed at mitigating the risks associated with nicotine consumption.
