Abstract

This chapter explores the integration of speech-based natural language interfaces (NLI) into UML modeling editors to enhance accessibility and usability. The study presents a prototype that uses BERT models for intent recognition and entity extraction, trained on a dataset derived from user surveys. The evaluation of the prototype shows that it is capable of fulfilling many modeling tasks, despite the prototype’s early-development phase usability problems. The chapter also discusses the limitations of current graphical modeling editors and proposes a solution that could promote inclusion and enable users of all abilities to engage in conceptual modeling. The study concludes with future work directions, including extending the approach to support a more diverse and complex set of modeling actions and reaching out to the accessibility community for feedback.
