Abstract

The article explores the techno-economic and environmental aspects of a solar-aided lignocellulosic biorefinery in South Africa. It delves into the conversion of corn stover into ethanol and the potential of lignin as a valuable co-product. The study assesses various scenarios of energy supply, including solar photovoltaic (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP), and evaluates their impact on energy efficiency, net energy output, and production costs. The analysis also considers the environmental benefits of commercializing lignin, reducing the overall carbon footprint and aligning with circular economy principles. The findings offer valuable insights into the feasibility and sustainability of integrating renewable energy sources into biorefineries.
