Abstract

This chapter delves into the temporal distribution and chemical characterization of atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) in Kozhikode, a coastal city in Kerala, India. The study reveals that PM 2.5 concentrations exceeded national and international air quality standards, with water-soluble inorganic ions contributing significantly to the particulate matter. Key findings include the predominance of sulfate, sodium, chloride, and potassium ions, indicating both marine and anthropogenic sources. The morphological analysis using SEM and EDX highlights the crustal origin of many particles, while meteorological parameters such as temperature, rainfall, and wind speed were found to influence PM 2.5 levels. The backward trajectory analysis suggests that air masses carrying marine aerosols significantly impact the city's air quality. This comprehensive study underscores the importance of understanding local and regional factors in managing air pollution in coastal urban areas.
