Abstract

This chapter examines the relationship between public expenditure and economic growth in Zimbabwe from 1990 to 2020. The study focuses on the impact of capital expenditure, government consumption expenditure, and social sector spending on GDP growth. It also considers the role of inflation in this dynamic. The research uses the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method to analyze time series data, providing a robust framework for understanding the economic implications of government spending. The findings reveal that capital expenditure has a positive and significant impact on economic growth, while social sector spending and inflation have negative effects. Government consumption expenditure, however, shows no significant impact. The study concludes that strategic allocation of government spending, particularly in capital projects, can drive economic growth in Zimbabwe. Additionally, the historical context and empirical evidence presented offer valuable insights for policymakers aiming to optimize public expenditure for economic development.
