Abstract

The article delves into the aerodynamics of sharp and filet-edged cylinders in high supersonic flow, motivated by the need to better characterize the forces and moments acting on uncontrolled rigid bodies, such as space debris. The study focuses on the impact of aspect ratios and edge shapes on drag, lift, and moment coefficients, using free-flight techniques and high-speed optical tracking. The findings reveal significant differences in aerodynamic behavior between sharp and filet-edged cylinders, with implications for the stability and trajectory of re-entering objects. The research also highlights the potential for modified Newtonian theory to approximate the experimental data, providing valuable insights into the complex flow dynamics around blunt bodies.
