Abstract

The article delves into the application of non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for large-scale and complex engineering components fabricated by metal additive manufacturing (MAM) technology in the aerospace industry. It highlights the advantages of MAM over traditional subtractive fabrication methods, such as reduced weight, integrated complex structures, and shorter production cycles. However, the quality evaluation of MAM components presents significant challenges, including the detection of small-scale defects, high efficiency evaluation, and improved data processing capabilities. The article explores eight prominent NDT techniques, such as X-ray computer tomography, digital radiography, and laser ultrasonic testing, and discusses their application in the aerospace industry. It also identifies key challenges in NDT for MAM, such as insufficient ability to evaluate large-scale components, inadequate data processing, lack of standards, and higher detection requirements. The future directions of NDT technologies are highlighted, emphasizing the need for continuous improvement in detection ability, application of machine learning and digital twins in data processing, and the development of comprehensive testing standards. The article concludes by stressing the urgent need for integrated multi-functional detection systems to meet the growing demands of the aerospace industry.
