Abstract

The 2024 general election in the UK was characterized by a significant collapse of the Conservative Party's support, with voters dispersing across various political parties. The election saw a notable rise in fragmentation, with Reform UK making substantial gains on the radical right, while Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens, and independent candidates advanced on the left. The analysis uses data from the British Election Study Internet Panel (BESIP) to examine the shifts in voter choices over the 2019–24 Parliament, highlighting the demographic groups that shifted and their destinations. The text also explores the impact of Brexit and the underlying ideological and social divisions on voter choices, as well as the long-term trends of party system change. Additionally, the text discusses the role of the electoral system in shaping the outcome and the potential for renewed scrutiny of the first-past-the-post system in the future. The election delivered unprecedented fragmentation, but also a historic one-party legislative landslide, reflecting the complex and evolving nature of British politics.
