Topographic slope angle is one of the most important factors affecting soil erosion. More and more methods, which compute topographic slope angle, are used based on digital elevation model (DEM) with continuous progress of geographic information system (GIS). However, each method has quite different result. With the example DEM data of the central mountain area, Shandong Province, we compare the computing results between the maximum downhill slope angle algorithm and the method employed by ArcGIS GRID. Finally, we draw some conclusions that the maximum downhill slope angle algorithm can retain the local variability present in the original DEM, avoid smoothing slope surface by ArcGIS GRID method, and finally improve the calculation of soil erosion.
