Abstract

The chapter delves into the determinants of carbon emissions in Macau, leveraging the STIRPAT model to explore the influence of population, economic growth, and technology on environmental degradation. It also investigates the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis, which posits an inverted U-shaped relationship between economic growth and environmental quality. Additionally, the LMDI model is utilized to decompose the factors affecting carbon emissions, providing a detailed breakdown of the primary drivers. The study employs data from 1991 to 2020, focusing on petroleum gas, liquid fuel, and electricity consumption. The empirical results offer insights into the characteristics and correlations of the variables, highlighting the significant impact of economic growth and industrial structure on carbon emissions. This multifaceted approach offers a robust understanding of Macau's carbon emission dynamics, essential for informed policy decisions.
