Abstract

This study delves into the global patterns and national differences in electricity efficiency, focusing on the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and renewable energy. The research analyzes the main drivers and barriers to electricity efficiency in 36 major countries from 2000 to 2021, highlighting the impact of economic growth, population, industrial structure, renewable energy, and ICT industry exports. The study finds that economic growth is the primary driver of improved electricity efficiency, while population growth and the development of the ICT industry pose significant barriers. The analysis also reveals that the impact of the ICT industry on electricity efficiency varies across countries due to differences in industrial structure, energy systems, and trade patterns. The study concludes with policy recommendations aimed at enhancing electricity efficiency, such as aligning economic growth with sustainability goals, focusing on domestic industrial electricity efficiency, and promoting the sustainable development of the ICT industry. This comprehensive study provides valuable insights for policymakers and industry professionals seeking to improve electricity efficiency and achieve net-zero carbon emissions.
