Abstract

The study focuses on the ductility variation of high-pressure die-cast AE44 alloy, highlighting the significant role of inhomogeneous microstructure. It examines the through-thickness microstructure, which includes a core with ultra-coarse ESCs and two fine-grained skins. The research employs DIC to analyze strain fields and EBSD to characterize grain size and crystal orientation. The findings reveal that strain localization is primarily caused by ultra-coarse ESCs with soft orientations and defects, significantly impacting ductility. The article emphasizes the need for optimizing processing parameters to minimize defects and ultra-coarse ESCs for enhancing mechanical properties.
