Abstract

This study delves into the transformation of sulfides in free-cutting steel through the addition of cerium, focusing on the formation and growth of (Ce, Mn)S-type inclusions. The research employs a combination of high-temperature experiments, non-aqueous electrolysis, and first-principles calculations to investigate the evolution of inclusion morphology and composition. Key findings reveal that cerium modifies the behavior of sulfides, leading to the formation of uniformly distributed (Ce, Mn)S inclusions with a crystal structure similar to MnS. The study also explores the thermodynamic conditions for the formation of these inclusions and constructs a growth model of (Ce, Mn)S on a CeS substrate. The results provide valuable insights into the influence of rare earth elements on inclusion growth and offer theoretical support for related studies in steel metallurgy.
