Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical aspects of surface grinding processes, focusing on the effects of cross-feed variations on vibration and surface roughness for hardened tool steel SKD11. The study reveals that increased cross-feed and depth of cut significantly amplify vibrations, which in turn degrade surface roughness. The research employs a meticulous methodology, including time-domain vibration measurements and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis, to provide a detailed understanding of these phenomena. The findings underscore the strong correlation between vibration and surface roughness, with a correlation factor nearing 99%. This correlation opens avenues for using vibration monitoring as a predictive tool in production processes, enabling early detection of potential issues and reducing product rejection. The chapter also explores the influence of grinding wheel types, demonstrating that larger grit sizes result in higher vibrations and rougher surfaces. The comprehensive data and visualizations presented offer valuable insights for optimizing surface grinding processes and enhancing product quality.
