Abstract

The chapter delves into the historical and contemporary use of vegetation for slope stabilization, emphasizing the sustainable and environmentally friendly nature of this approach. It discusses the critical role of plant roots in improving soil shear strength parameters, which are essential for preventing shallow landslides and erosion. The study presents direct shear tests conducted on organic and sandy soils with and without roots, revealing that root reinforcement significantly enhances soil strength, particularly at the surface. The research also explores the impact of soil structure and compactness on plant growth and root development, providing valuable insights into the optimal conditions for bio-stabilization. The findings highlight the importance of considering natural vegetation and local climate in designing effective slope stabilization solutions. The chapter concludes by discussing the quantitative contributions of vegetation to shallow slope stability, offering a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms involved in soil-root reinforcement.
