Abstract

The effect of strategic noise in linear regression is examined, where agents manipulate data to minimize their loss. Traditional analysis assumes untainted data, but recent work focuses on robustness to stochastic or adversarial noise. This article introduces a third model, strategic noise, where agents are self-interested and manipulate data to benefit themselves. The focus is on linear regression algorithms that minimize the p-norm of residuals with convex regularization. The article explores the existence, characteristics, and computation of pure Nash equilibria in these algorithms and connects them to strategyproof algorithms. Key results include the unbounded pure price of anarchy for certain algorithms and the existence of a strategyproof algorithm that returns the equilibrium regression hyperplane. The article also discusses empirical results and future research directions, making it a valuable resource for understanding strategic behavior in linear regression.
