The Effects of Recycled Brick Aggregate on the Durability and Elastic Properties of the Structural Grade Concrete: A Review

Present construction approach boosted economic growth and production of Construction and Demolition (C&D) wastes. The volume of rubbish produced provides practical obstacles to landfill capacities and lifespan, making its treatment and disposal environmental issues. As brick is the second most generated C&D waste, its proper disposal poses a significance in the construction industry. It tests concrete containing Recycled Brick aggregate (RBA) as an improvement over ordinary aggregates for durability. The permeability rate of the recycled brick aggregate concrete is higher about 21% than natural aggregates due to bricks materials are generally highly porous, and can easily absorb water resulting in an increase in both water penetration, air flow (oxygen exchange) as well as chloride content ingress. The role of an integral inhibitor and/or retarder in the concrete literature deals mainly with its function over decades effecting the strength of durability phases. Recycled brick aggregate in concrete increases expansion under conditions like NaOH or water. This expansion maybe attributed to pozzolanic reactions and potentially the alkali-silica reaction. The paper also explores shrinkage, which is a crucial aspect of concrete durability. Most studies in the literature indicate an increase in drying shrinkage strains with the use of recycled brick aggregate in concrete about 80% at 90 days at age. This increase is often attributed to the reduced restraining effect of brick aggregates compared to conventional coarse aggregates. However, some research suggests that when the substitution rate is less than 100%, recycled brick aggregate can help retain moisture during hydration, thereby reducing shrinkage about 12%.
