Abstract

The article delves into the critical issue of wildlife damage to agriculture in rural Japan, with a particular focus on the Japanese sika deer. It highlights the economic impact of deer browsing on vegetation and the potential of sika deer meat as a sustainable and nutritious food source. The study examines the nutritional components of deer meat from 25 feral sika deer harvested in Mie Prefecture, Japan, revealing significant variations in protein, fat, and mineral content based on the spatial patterns of vegetation and land use within their home ranges. The research employs advanced statistical methods, including generalized linear models and spatial analysis, to quantify the effects of different vegetation and land-use categories on the nutritional quality of deer meat. Key findings include the positive impact of herbaceous communities and farmlands on protein content and the influence of clear-cut areas and developed lands on fat content. The article also discusses the implications of these findings for wildlife management and sustainable agriculture, offering insights into how landscape structure can be optimized to enhance the nutritional status of feral deer and mitigate agricultural damage.
