Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate relationship between renewable energy and energy intensity in six least developed countries: Nepal, Cambodia, Bangladesh, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and Chad. Through pooled and country-specific regression analyses, the study reveals that traditional biomass, while technically renewable, can increase energy intensity without corresponding economic gains. The findings underscore the importance of transitioning to modern, efficient renewable technologies for sustainable development. The chapter also highlights the varying impacts of renewable energy adoption across different countries, emphasizing the need for tailored energy policies. By examining the energy-growth nexus, this chapter provides valuable insights into how renewable energy expansion interacts with energy efficiency and broader development goals, offering a comprehensive overview of the challenges and opportunities in the energy sector of least developed countries.
