Abstract

The study focuses on enhancing the flame retardancy of cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) composites using boric acid modified ZSM-5 as a synergistic agent in intumescent flame retardant (IFR) systems. The modified ZSM-5 particles were characterized using SEM and XPS, revealing a uniform dispersion and increased boric acid content. The flame retardancy of COC composites was evaluated using LOI, UL-94, and cone calorimeter tests, demonstrating significant improvements in flame retardancy, particularly with the COCs/25BZ5 formulation. The study also highlights the formation of a stable carbon layer through catalytic esterification crosslinking and the pyrolysis of olefin molecules, contributing to the enhanced flame retardancy of the composites. The findings provide valuable insights into the synergistic effects of boric acid modified ZSM-5 in IFR systems, offering a promising approach to improving the fire safety of COC materials.
