Excerpt

The shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) presents a significant challenge to pedestrian safety, with EVs being heavier and capable of faster acceleration than traditional gas-powered vehicles. This article delves into the alarming rise in pedestrian fatalities in the United States, attributing it partly to the increased sales of SUVs and trucks, and the growing popularity of EVs. It discusses the potential dangers posed by EVs, such as the Hyundai Kona electric subcompact SUV and the Ford F-150 Lightning, which are considerably heavier than their gas-powered counterparts. The article also explores the competition among EV manufacturers to achieve the fastest acceleration times, further exacerbating the safety risks. It highlights the need for updated safety ratings and regulations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to protect pedestrians, including the recommendation of driver-assist technologies like automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Additionally, the article draws attention to passive safety measures implemented in Japan and the European Union since 2005, which aim to mitigate head injury risks by encouraging vehicle hood deformation. This comprehensive analysis underscores the urgent need for effective safety measures to ensure the transition to EVs does not come at the cost of increased pedestrian fatalities.
