Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical issue of moisture management in prefabricated lightweight housing systems, focusing on those constructed with expanded polystyrene (EPS) panels. The study highlights the prevalence of condensation and mold growth in these structures, which are often used as temporary housing solutions in disaster recovery scenarios. Through dynamic hygrothermal simulations, the authors evaluate the risk of surface and interstitial condensation, as well as mold growth potential, across various climatic conditions. The investigation reveals that current system configurations are vulnerable to moisture accumulation, particularly at critical junctions. To address this, the study explores the effectiveness of internal moisture buffering layers, such as cementitious basecoats and gypsum plasterboards, in reducing indoor humidity peaks and limiting condensation risk.
