Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical need for optimizing the thermal comfort of temporary housing solutions, which are increasingly used in emergency situations worldwide. Through detailed numerical simulations, the study evaluates various passive cooling strategies, including shading, cool finishing materials, natural ventilation, and increased internal thermal inertia. The research is structured in three main phases: calibration of a simulation model using a full-scale prototype, analysis of summer performance under different climatic scenarios, and testing of selected passive cooling strategies. The findings provide actionable insights on improving indoor conditions, particularly by examining trade-offs between thermal comfort enhancement, cost-effectiveness, and operational feasibility. The chapter concludes with a cost-benefit analysis and recommendations for policymakers, architects, engineers, and humanitarian workers to ensure healthier and more comfortable indoor environments in lightweight emergency shelters.
