Abstract

Wildfires, increasingly influenced by anthropogenic climate change, pose a significant global threat, affecting vast land areas and altering hydrogeological processes. This chapter focuses on a specific wildfire event at the Pisciolo hillslope, where a grazing fire completely burned the vegetation, providing a rare opportunity to study the soil's response to such an event. Through extensive field monitoring and numerical modeling using Plaxis 2D, the study investigates the thermal impact on the topsoil, revealing that significant temperature variations were confined to the near-surface layer, up to a depth of 20 cm. The research highlights the importance of understanding the short-term thermal effects of wildfires on soil cover and vegetation, which is crucial for assessing risks and developing mitigation measures. The study also underscores the need for advanced modeling techniques to capture the full chemo-physical complexity of wildfire effects on soil, paving the way for future research into long-term impacts and recovery processes.
