Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of mineralogy in the pelletization process of Indian chromite overburden, focusing on its potential for nickel extraction. The study examines two types of chromite overburden samples, one rich in iron and nickel and the other with moderate levels but high silica content. Through detailed characterization and thermodynamic analysis, the optimal pelletization conditions, including basicity, binder content, and induration cycle, are determined. The research highlights the importance of mineralogy in establishing the right parameters for producing high-quality pellets. The study also explores the direct reduction of these pellets, achieving a metallization rate of approximately 90%. The findings provide a promising route for utilizing chromite overburden in the production of nickel-based alloys, offering valuable insights into the optimization of pelletization processes for better metallurgical properties.
