Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of sustainable consumption in preserving the environment and promoting social equity, with a focus on the European Union. It examines how sustainable consumption patterns can inform and transform supply chain strategies, providing a holistic view of sustainability challenges. The study reveals that consumers across all income levels are willing to pay a premium for sustainable products, with higher-income individuals more likely to purchase sustainable options. Additionally, the research highlights the strong correlation between higher education levels and awareness of sustainable consumption, suggesting that education is vital in promoting sustainable practices. The chapter also explores the willingness of consumers to pay a premium for sustainable products, with a significant proportion willing to pay up to a 10% premium. Furthermore, it discusses the positive association between higher household income and the likelihood of purchasing sustainable products, indicating that income can influence sustainable consumption patterns. The findings underscore the importance of considering educational and economic factors in shaping sustainable consumption behaviors and suggest that businesses and policymakers can leverage these insights to promote sustainable practices and drive positive change in supply chain management.
